Midhurst (A) - 6 August 2011
Lost by 6 Wickets

Idlers 180/10 lost to Midhurst 180/4

The Idlersí first season in Hampshire County 1 continued in an all familiar pattern with a poor performance against a competitive Midhurst team. Coming into the game on the back of a strong victory against Shrewton, and with a near full strength line up, the Idlers were expecting another good performance.

Having lost the toss and been inserted, their innings started in steady fashion with skipper George Shepherd and Alex Ince surviving the opening encounters, although runs were hard to come by. Once Ince fell for a battling 16 Chaz Sheppard quickly followed, but Joe Cranch steadied the innings and, along with Shepherd, started building towards a competitive total. Shepherd looked back to his best, striking sixes straight down the ground. When Cranch (38) and Shepherd (63) were dismissed the Idlers innings started faltering, and wickets fell regularly. The only resistance came with an elegant 27 from Al Richards, and the Idlers innings came to end inside their 50 overs with only 180 on the board.

Midhurst started their reply steadily and, despite some tight bowling, particularly from Nick Lawrence (10-3-21-1), appeared to be batting themselves to an easy victory. The Idlers did not give up though, and, perhaps inspired by the beautiful setting of Cowdray Castle, fought back to cause a wobble with some quick wickets. It proved to be only a hiccup, as the Midhurst captain Tim Powell came to the crease and bludgeoned his side to victory.
