Hungerford (H) - 5 June 2010
Won by 20 Runs
SIMEON DOUSES HUNGERFORD’S HOPES

Idlers CC beat Hungerford 1st XI by 20 Runs.

In a game in which more than 500 runs were scored, Idlers secured maximum points in an exciting victory over Hungerford.

Having won the toss, Idlers again started the match brandishing the willow, and again posted an impressive target. Gilbey (56) and Ince (18) began proceedings steadily and laid a solid foundation for the middle order to build a score late on. Following the departure of skipper Harms (6), Shepherd (91) arrived at the crease and, in partner with Gilbey, turned up the heat on Hungerford's bowlers, both demonstrating an impressive breadth of strokeplay, with Shepherd clearing the rope six times. The last 15 overs saw a dramatic rise in the run rate, Shepherd eventually falling foul to a superb catch at short fine leg by Hungerford's youthul substitute fielder who had been keeping score 5 minutes before. The innings was completed with intent, Warde (38), Douse and (19) Kay (16 not out) supplied 11 boundaries pushing the total to 263 at tea.

Hungerford, in reply, made an excellent effort at chasing down what always looked a strong score. Wallis (37), Johnson (49) and Smith (50) frustrated the Idlers opening bowlers until Douse (46-4) and Warde (45-4) completed their great all round performances and dismissed the lion's share of the Hungerford batsmen. Douse rose to the challenge at crucial times never allowing the away team to form match-winning partnerships. Hungerford finished twenty runs short, but could hold their heads high as this was a close match with many turning points, in which Idlers lively chat, grit and determination in the field was enough to pull them through.
