Portsmouth & S'sea (H) - 23 July 2011
Lost by 4 wickets

Idlers 135/10 lost to Portsmouth & Southsea 137/6 by 4 wickets
A disappointing batting display by Idlers led to the 5th loss of the season for the Harnham based side. Batting first after losing the toss Joe Cranch (27) and George Shepherd (50) built a solid platform but one of them should have scored a hundred to set a competitive total. In a week where the Idlers squad suffered from poor availability they were reliant on all players performing at their best. The wicket wasn’t easy to bat on and Portsmouth & Southsea bowled in good areas to restrict scoring opportunities. Charles Sheppard received a poor LBW decision but had benefitted from a close decision first ball and an inexperienced top order was exposed early in the innings. After the openers only Martin Clements (11*) reached double figures as a succession of wickets ended Idlers innings on 135 from 39.5 overs. Opposition captain, Dave Upton, was the star of the show with 3-16.

Needing to bowl and field extremely well to stand any chance Idlers got off to a fantastic start in reducing the opposition to 9 for 3 from 4 overs. Rob James took an excellent catch at mid-wicket and Joe Cranch poached perhaps the easiest catch of the season from under bowler Nick Lawrence’s nose and entertainingly shoulder barged him for good measure. The electric start didn’t last as Dave Upton (79) took the game away from Idlers in a partnership of 119 with fellow South African, Urmann. A further rally of 9 for 3 at the end of the innings saved some pride for Idlers but they hadn’t set enough runs and were convincingly beaten by 4 wickets.

With a full squad to choose from this week versus Shrewton they’ll be hoping to bounce back and ease up the table from the current position of 11th out of 18.
TEAM : Joe Cranch, George Shepherd, Chaz Sheppard, Steve Haugh, Garin Bishoff, Ben Impey, David Salomon, Grant Whitcombe, Martin Clements, Nick Lawrence, Robert James
