Alton III 171-8 beat Idlers 147 by 24 runs

A disappointing performance away at Alton saw the Idlers count the cost of conceding a whopping 46 extras in their first defeat of their 2007 campaign.

Missing several players and taking the field with only ten men the Idlers struggled from the outset to contain their opponents despite the fine bowling of Rawle Beckles. Beckles continued his early season form with the ball to return figures of 12-2-25-5. On a quick wicket Beckles hit the pitch hard and took the first four wickets of the match with his raw pace.

Stubborn resistance from A.Willman (41) and young H.Little (22) took advantage of the sparse field to steer the home side to a total of 171-8 off their allotted overs. Unfortunately the Idlersí bowlers strayed too often and the 27 wides and 10 no-balls that they bowled were far too many. The top scorer for the home team was the extras column which was only 4 short of a half century Ė below par for a team that hadnít conceded a hundred runs in an innings so far this season.

Beckles eventually claimed his well-deserved 5-for in his last over and Jack Betenson (2-63) picked up a couple of late wickets but the damage had been done.

The Idlersí run chase started badly and left the visitors teetering on 34-5 with A.Tapp doing most of the damage with 3-21. The openers and middle-order all got out cheaply with the exception of Andy Harms whose captainís knock of 64 threatened to alter the outcome of the day. The focused Harms blasted 8 fours and a six in a determined innings peppered with boundaries and hard running. The dismissal of Harms augured the beginning of the end and with so few wickets to play with the Idlers fell 24 runs short of their target.
