Portsmouth II (A) - 8 May 2010
Won by 24 Runs (Rain Affected)
IDLERS BEGIN WITH A CRANCH LED WIN AGAINST PORTSMOUTH

Idlers 250 for 6 beat Portsmouth II 222 for 8 by 14 runs (reduced target of 236 from 40 overs)

On a distinctly dark and dreary day on the Portsmouth seafront, newly promoted Idlers began their campaign for success in County 2 with a close fought win.

Taking on Portsmouth II, recently relegated from County 1, Idlers lost the toss and were asked to bat on a damp green surface. The Idlers openers steadily built a score of 48 from the first 15 overs. The dismissal of Alex Ince (14) brought skipper Andy Harms (66) to accompany Jo Cranch (53) at the crease. Both batsmen showed excellent timing for the first match of the season and guided the side to 95 by the time the second wicket fell. Strong support down the order from debutant Idlers, batsmen five and six, Chris Warde (43) and Jimmy McKillop (28 with 3 sixes), accelerated the run rate and enabled the visiting Idlers to conclude their innings on a strong total of 250 from 45 overs.

Following a short rain delay in the opening innings, Portsmouth were set a reduced total of 236 from 40 overs to win the game. Having lost two early wickets, Australian batsman, Dean Oliffe (96) and Chris Moon (58) constructed a superb partnership of 154 to keep the home side in touch. Needing 67 from the last 10 overs an inspired five wicket haul from Jo Cranch 5-49 damaged Portsmouth spirits and ensured that, with wickets falling at regular intervals, they fell short of the necessary target finishing the game on 222/8.
