Whiteparish (A) - 3 June 2006

GILBEY STARS AS IDLERS MAKE IT THREE FROM THREE

Idlers 274-9 beat Whiteparish 191 all out by 83 runs

After having been somewhat surprisingly put into bat by the home side on the hottest Saturday of the year thus far, the visiting Idlers got off to a flying start as Nathan Dod scored a rapid 20. But the cheap dismissal of several top-order batsmen, including a homicidal run out, left the Idlers teetering precariously at 71-5 after only 12 overs.

The sixth wicket partnership between Jasper Gilbey and Max Biles steadied the ship and set about seeing off the Whiteparish opening bowlers who both bowled their allotted twelve overs in a gamble that didnít pay off. This invaluable partnership between the classy Gilbey and the dogged Biles (33) eased the building pressure and, despite riding their luck several times, paved the way for the onslaught which was to follow.

The arrival at crease of Idlers debutant Rawle Beckles saw a remarkable partnership in which both batsmen attacked the wilting Whiteparish supporting bowlers with gusto. The hard-hitting Beckles was unfortunate to be stranded on 45* after a memorable first knock for the club but the star of the show was undoubtedly Gilbey. With impeccable timing and mounting confidence, Gilbey turned the game around and guided the team to a daunting total. In his innings of 114, Gilbey hit ten 4ís and eight 6ís smashing the club record for 6ís scored in a match.

Whiteparish set about their mammoth run-chase in admirable fashion with opener Darryl Parsons (36) getting the team off on the right footing but a brace of early wickets for Martin Clements (3-35) curbed the Parishís attacking intentions. In a period of uncertainty, the Idlerís other debutant, Joe Frampton (2-24), showed much promise and his two wickets were well deserved. A weary Gilbey bagged figures of 3-13 to further smother any chance of a Whiteparish win. The determined resistance of batsman-keeper Richard Hamblin (46) was eventually broken to seal the maximum points victory for the Idlers whose only defeats thus far this season have been by Mother Nature!
