IDLERS BATTLE HOME IN HARD EARNED VICTORY

Idlers 274 for 4 beat Sarisbury Athletic II 259 ao by 15 runs

The Idlers first home game of the season saw a hard fought victory over last years County 3 champions. Winning the toss Idlers skipper Andy Harms instinctively elected to bat first and made good use of a typical Harnham wicket. Solid partnerships right throughout the innings laid the platform for a dominant 274 for 4 against an under strength opposition who were missing 5 players from the previous week. Skipper Andy Harms led the way with a well paced 99 and unselfishly fell trying to clear the boundary in the 42nd over. Harms was amiably supported by Cranch 44 and Shepherd 42 with aggressive team batting which saw a total of 12 sixes struck in the innings.
In reply Sarisbury kept up with the rate all through their innings, but the regular loss of wickets always left Idlers favorites for the win. Spirited batting from McKeener (56) and Cooper (56) rattled the home side, who compounded the visitors fight back with some awful fielding and bowling in the middle overs. The introduction of specialist death bowler, Cranch, put the breaks on the Sarisbury fightback and swung the tide in the Idlers favour with the dismissal of 2 key middle order wickets.

The visitors still kept in the hunt and required 59 from the last 10 overs with 4 wickets remaining. Regular runs ensured Sarisbury always threatened victory but a well judged catch from Lawrence and 2 late stumpings from Shepherd killed the spirited resistance. It was finally left to Lawrence to bowl the 89 and best over of the match to clean bowl Edwards and leave the Idlers with victory by 15 runs.
