Waterlooville (H) - 14 May 2011
Lost by 5 wickets
IDLERS TAKE ONE STEP FORWARD, FOLLOWED BY ONE BACK

Idlers 227/9 lost by 5 wickets to Waterlooville 228/5

Coming into this fixture the Idlers were confident that they could make amends for last weeks performance and bounce back with a victory against the unfortunately named Waterlooville. On paper the visitors may have been favourites having come third in League One last year but with the Idlers superb home form at Harnham throughout the last decade it was a close one to call.

The Idlers won the toss and elected to bat and got off to a quick start but lightning struck two weeks running as both opening batsmen were dismissed in quick succession within the first 10 overs. The Waterlooville bowlers found it much harder to dismiss the Idlers no 3 though as (C. Sheppard 112) dominated the visiting bowling attack. He raced to 50 off 51 balls and reached 100 after only 83. His innings included 6 sixes as no bowler was shown mercy. The adage goes though that in cricket you bat in pairs but sadly none of his team mates could provide any notable support. N. Lawrence did cause the opposition some cause for concern with some late hitting, more commonly seen in the IPL than the regional Hampshire League but in reality the Idlers total of 227/9 could have been much more imposing had Sheppard had better support.

The Idlers though at least had runs on the board and a score to protect. Like the Idlers, Waterlooville lost early wickets. The turning point came though as (A. Shepherd 96*) the Waterlooville opening batsman was dropped in the opening exchanges. It was a moment that in the lower leagues the Idlers may have normally got away with but the team is quickly learning that at the top all facets of our game have to be on song. Shepherd went on to control the visitorís innings reaching the Idlers total with 7 overs to spare despite the best efforts of (M. Clements 10-0-27-2) who again bowled with control and guile.

The Idlers season certainly hasnít started as planned and next week they face another tough game away against Cadnam who were promoted alongside them from County 2.
