IDLERS WINNING STREAK HALTED BY EAST TYTHERLEY

East Tytherley 234-5 beat Idlers CC 233-8 by 5 wickets.

Idlers winning streak of five straight wins came to an end on Saturday. A closely contested, batsman dominated game, handed the Harnham based team their first defeat of the season at the hands of second from bottom East Tytherley.

Having been put into bat the Idlers openers managed an excellent opening partnership of 146. Jo Cranch (80) again played a decisive roll in starting the Idlers innings, this time shared with stand in opener Jimmy Mckillop (60), who continued to show his capabilities as a quality batsman with some fantastic stroke play. This pushed the scoring rate along quickly and the Idlers looked to be heading for another big total.

Once the Idlers openers were dismissed, both caught on the boundary, Tim Mynott was the only batsman capable of holding the innings together, amassing a quick 51. Some good bowling and fielding by the visitors brought a flurry of wickets, the scoring rate slowed and the Idlers were unable to capitalise on the strong start to the innings. A final score of 233 did bring about maximum points for the home club but East Tytherley could be happy as at one stage the total looked like being considerably higher.

Opening for East Tytherley, C Smith and J Neacle started the run chase with a brisk stand of 35 before N Lawrence (10-35-3) made the first breakthrough removing Neacle for 16. M Clements (10-33-1) then took the second wicket before Lawrence quickly added a third. East Tytherley were teetering on 40 for 3 and Idlers confidence was growing.

W Edwards came to the crease to support the ever more confident Smith. Edwards played very aggressively, using good footwork to charge the Idlers bowlers. Some lusty blows including four sixes brought Edwards to 74 before a calamitous run out brought his innings, and the 155 run 4th wicket partnership, to an end.

By this time the damage had been done and it was left on the shoulders of the hero of the hour Smith, to steer his side home with good support from the lower order. An almost chanceless innings saw Smith selflessly see out the win just short of his century, with a score of 97 not out.

With second place Flamingos and other of the top teams losing, Idlers remain in pole position in County division 2. This sets up a top of the table clash, away to second place Cadnam on Saturday.
